Those who work in the addiction industry have a familiar understanding of how these drugs wreak havoc in the lies of the users. You also get to understand how attractive these drugs seem to the addict to the point where they have to have some. They crave the high, and cannot think any better of themselves. The drug inhibit their ability to feel any human pride.

It is not secret that opioids are killing people at an alarming rate. They touch on more than the addicts’ lives. This drug abuse issue affects everyone in society. We now have some of the strongest drugs ever made, and their death toll is at its highest. The trend seems only to get worse.

If you hear people talk of abstinence, you would think it was a simple thing to do. Granted, there are cases of people who simply stopped using drugs, and that was that. Others found help in the process that AA meetings advocate, and found peace and broke free of the drugs. But there are cases of people who these methods do not work on them.

They need to take a different approach to quitting. You will hear of certain abstinence cases ending up in death. As you stay off a drug; your body shall grow less tolerant to it. The idea is to get you off enjoying any of it as a tolerant person would. But in case you cannot hold on to the end, it will be bad. An addict will go straight back to their previous dose. Since the body is not prepared for that, an overdose happens. You shall see websites announcing the passing of a young person due to an overdose.

We therefore need to think of more ways than just abstinence. We can for instance use substitutes to these drugs, such as medical marijuana. You shall discover more benefits with it, since it also help in pain management, and leave less undesirable effects, if at all.

There is the danger or a relapse still, since marijuana is a well-known gateway drug. While this is not a perfect solution, it provides a more palatable alternative to what hard drugs do to an addict’s body and mind. We have even more substitutes out there. They should be chosen on the basis of their lesser effects on the lives of the addicts, and their better chances at weaning off an addict from their dependence on drugs.
This may be a risky option, but the risks involved are not as bad as hard drugs. If we care for the lives of addicts, we need to find better ways of helping them. We need to discover more methods that work better on addicts. As you deal with an addict, you learn that there is no one explanation to their state. This is why one solution is not a good solution.
